The nightmare is the sequel to Regine Abel’s novel The Mistwalker, and it truly delivers. Just like The Mistwalker, the nightmare is a standalone novel and you do not need to have read the previous novel to understand what is happening.
The Nightmare follows the story of Zain and Naima. The starkest difference between this book and the previous, is instead of being Naima’s greatest wish, Zain is her darkest desire.
The world the Regine Abel builds in The Mistwalker is expanded on greatly, and a few familiar side characters make a reappearance which is great if you ended up loving the side characters as well.
The core plot of this novel is a Nightmare named Darryl is on the loose, killing person after person without remorse or any inclination to stop. Naima must work with her own nightmare, Zain, to help him learn and grow so he can stop Darryl.
It almost sounds like a broken record, but the best part about this book is the characters themselves, Especially Zain. For his entire creation, Zain has known one specific thing; he has believed his creator Naima, only wanted to be punished and feel pain for events that had happened previously in her life. This ends up not being the case and he has to struggle to find out how to cope with losing that motivation. On top of that, as strong as Zain thinks he is (which is incredibly strong), it isn’t strong enough. Once he is confronted with this knowledge he sinks into a depressive episode. Regine Abel does such an excellent job of showing the depression, and moments of doubt that you almost went to hug the book to try and comfort the characters.
The worst part of this book is honestly something so incredibly small it almost isn’t worth mentioning. That being said, of course I am going to mention it. At the end of the book there is a big fight that has been expertly built up too. At moments, while you are reading the scene, it almost feels as though you can get a bit lost as to who is where and what is happening. That being said, it is a tiny thing that simply slowing down in reading can fix.
Overall, at 298 pages this book is a solid length. by the time you finish it you are going to need to take a moment to just sit and process what you finished, it is that good. At the moment I am not sure if there is going to be a third book but I can adamantly say I hope there is.
