Help Me, I’m Here by Anastasia Helena Fenald is a book of poetry I have been putting off reading for a while simply because I knew it would hurt to read. This is actually a book of poems I had started previously, but ended up putting down because I just was not in a good headspace to read it.
This is a powerful and wonderful little book of poems, and I love that Anastasia set it up as a call and answer format. All the poems in this book have been written by her at varying ages. And the poems she wrote when she was younger, she the answers as an adult. So when “little me” was crying out for help and begging to be loved, as an adult Anastasia answers herself. She is doing her best to be, as an adult, the person she needed when she was a child. Acknowledging the pain of her past, of what happened, and trying to comfort it as an adult.
There were also a few lines in this book that really stuck with me. For example, “Love you so loud you’d wish I’d be quiet.” What a stunning and impactful line. And the fact that she is talking about herself not only when she was younger but also as an adult? I still struggle so hard with self love and taking care of myself the way I need too, and I have never loved myself so loudly people wished I would be quiet.
Another line that really struck me with its importance was “Because seventeen years later I can’t remember who we were mad at.” All of the grudges I have held, the anger I have held onto, and for what? I barely remember the people I was mad at in high school, barely remember the why as to why I was mad.
Overall – I gotta be honest with you. If you are expecting to go into this book of poems for a good and lighthearted time, PUT THE BOOK DOWN. but if you want something that hurts, that is impactful, that is going to make you think about your younger self and the damage we cause to ourselves, I would recommend this book of poems.
