This year I discovered something called “Stuff Your Kindle Day” where authors can take their books, discount them down to free, and get added to a list. Then, on the Stuff Your Kindle Day, you can go to the website and scroll through all of the books and buy the ones you like. In case you are wondering, yes, I did buy a lot of books. And one of those books I bought is The Castle of 1,000 Doors: A Progression Fantasy Adventure by Kenny Gould.
This is one of the most ridiculous books I have ever read, and I loved every second of it.
Our main characters name is King Crow, and he is a professional athlete suddenly convicted of treason. He is sentenced to Toroth-Gol to try and survive all of the floors of the dungeon. If he lives, he is free. But the odds of living are not good.
The best part of this book, fast-talking, sapient, electromagnetically charged potato named Spud. Spud is what convinced me to read this book, and when I was in a book reading slump I decided it was time to see if this was as good as I hoped.
This book read like every Dungeons and Dragon’s campaign I have ever played, mixed with some LARPing. Everything that happened in this book was weird and wonderful, from Spud screaming every time he gets lit on fire, to their being a talking tomato as well. Sincerely this book was just so much fun to read.
As much as I loved this book there are some bad parts about it. Mainly that if you are looking for a book with character development and a lot of depth, you are not getting that in this book. King Crow is the same person walking into the second floor of Toroth-Gol as he was walking into the first floor. The characters do come across as flat because they seem to have one defining personality trait and that is what they stick with through the entire thing. But personally, in this instance I didn’t mind that because I just took the book for what it was, a fun and ridiculous read.
Overall – This was a fun book and I am so glad I read it. I haven’t gotten to the second one yet and I am hoping I like that one as much when I do eventually read it. I am not entirely sure how many books the author plans to include in this series, but I hope they are all as fun and ridiculous as this one was.
