I think we all know by now that I like monster romance books right? And I especially like the books written by Regine Abel. So it should come as no surprise that I just finished I Married an Incubus, the 10th installment in her Prime Mating Agency series.
This story follows Malaya, a report who uncovers corruption in the justice system, who is sentenced to life in what is essentially considered Hell. The love interest? Her jailer Kronos.
I really loved that this book was an enemies to lover romance that was resolved quickly and easily. Kronos is able to look into someone’s soul and see if they are good or evil, and Malaya has an innocent soul.
I also really enjoyed that this book tackled corruption in the criminal justice system, and how Malaya had to find a new way to bring down the corrupt judge that had sentenced her to life in Hell forever. While Kronos believes her and trusts in what she is going after, he is also worried because his reputation is at stake as well.
The best part about this book was Kayog. I know, I know! I am a simp for this feathered person that is so kind and wonderful. The father figure I never had but always wanted if you will. Normally in this series when Kayog makes an appearance it is short and sweet and he is always kind and courteous to everyone. But in this book he had a temper and fought for Malaya. I loved seeing this side of him and loved that he is willing to throw away his “perfect match record” to save someone’s life. I also really liked how this book referenced characters in previous books in this series, without making it necessary to read all of those books. All of the information you needed from these books was in the story, with enough teasers that if you hadn’t read the other books, you would want too.
The thing I didn’t like about this book was how easy it was to tell who was good and who was bad. Granted, evil is typically something that is easily defined within a book, but in this instance the Obosian’s (the race which Kronos and the judge that sentenced Malaya is) can literally see the souls of everyone. They can see readily and easily if that persons soul is good or bad, if they are criminals or not. Kronos knew within five minutes of meeting Malaya that she was innocent, and somehow there is no other check and balance system when an Obosian judge is passing a sentence. This is something Regine clearly points out in the book as well, which I appreciated, but it still kind of irked me.
Overall – I really enjoyed this book and it was a great addition to the Prime Mating Agency series. I liked the new species of Obosian’s that was introduced and I liked the relationship that developed between our two main characters. This book also cemented how much I want the story of Kayog and his mate. I NEED IT!
