Book Review – Luca – DNF

Luca is a mafia/small town romance book by Jennifer Marcia.  I happen to love romance books, especially of the mafia variety, so I was eager to dive into this book and read it.

I lasted 17%.

Honestly, I want to say I found at least some redeeming qualities about this book, but I truly didn’t.  There were quite a few parts of it that I literally sat confused by.

This book starts with some background information.  Honor, our female main character, was on a jury trial that put a violent sexual predator behind bars.  How you ask?  By being on the jury.  Now, don’t get me wrong, a jury is an incredibly important part of the process, but in this process, Honor is a victim of sexual assault herself, and then she serves on the jury to convict a sexual predator.  Which, is highly biased.  This is also where the plot kicks in.

The individual that was put away has been released from jail early, and wants revenge on Honor.  Now to be completely clear, I have no idea if the criminal is going after every single person from the jury trial, or just Honor, because I didn’t read enough.

Now, if that is not enough for you to personally DNF a book, that’s fair.  The next thing that really bothered me is the mafia world Jennifer painted.  Now, I know the mafia exists.  We all know, the mafia exists.  And it doesn’t exist as well as it does because everyone is blatantly open about it.  There isn’t a resume that is handed that says “I used to work for the mafia.”  It is a highly secretive world.

And yet, somehow, within one week of moving to this new small town, Honor has gotten a job at a bar and learned that her boss is a gun runner, drug dealer, and a hit man.  In one week!  ONE WEEK!  And she learned this all out from a loud mouthed bar tender she worked with.

Overall – I truly did not like this book, for a mix of reasons, all of which I think could be easily remedied.
