I found another shifter romance book! Furbidden Attraction by R. O’Leary follows Jack and Louisa throughout their romance, and I loved the humor this book had!
The first thing I really loved about this book, was the lore the author took the time to build. Most often we get a backstory that shifters have always existed, and just deal with it. In this book however, that was not the case. We learn that the shifters came to be (as well as a few other species) because of a curse that was placed on them by angry witches. This was really a unique twist to a shifter book.
The overall story of this book was also incredibly interesting. I liked that Jack (who shifts into a dog) has a day job of building houses, but his main job is hunting down those that have been affected by the Blight creatures. He meets the heroine of out book, Louisa, when his dog form is shot and brought to the vet to be healed. This book did a great job of not info dumping on you while still managing to convey a lot of information that drew you into the world.
Without spoiling the ending, the author did a great job of taking the story and tying it up in the end by interweaving a ton of little threads that I had barely paid any attention too. It also did an excellent job of setting up the second book in this series to draw you in for more. In addition, normally when I read a book like this it is so serious, somber, and the men are typically controlling because of their pasts, and it was such a nice change to see a ton of humor in this book. There was a few moments where I literally laughed out loud (not that weird thing where I breathe air through my nose).
I think the part of this book I didn’t like, were the spicy scenes. They always seemed to come at an incredibly weird or inappropriate time, brought on my odd things. For instance, after having a horrific dinner with Jack’s parents, and storming out of his parents’ house, they then roamed around the grounds of his parents’ house and ultimately ended up having sex on a bench. And if you are wondering if the family came out and caught the tail end of the act, yes. Yes they did. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good spicy scene, but this honestly just felt cringey and made me want to skip past it.
Overall – this was a good shifter romance book that took a wonderfully new stance on how shifters and other creatures came to be. I loved the humor in this book, and I really appreciate how the author intertwines everything together. However, with the few phrases that were constantly repeated it kind of takes you out of the book when you see the same thing all of the time.
