Book Review – 12,000 Miles of Road Thoughts. Old Van, Old Man, Recovering Hippie, Dying Cat

I am not generally a huge fan of non-fiction books.  The most non-fiction I read is trying to learn more about my sewing machines, or learning more about true crime.  However, 12,000 Miles of Road Thoughts. Old Van, Old Man, Recovering Hippie, Dying Cat by Paul Willcott was something new to try.

The first thing I have to say about this book, is this is not a book you can just sit and read in one sitting.  This is not a long book, Amazon telling me the eBook is approximately 187 pages, but it isn’t necessarily one continuous story.

While I am being honest about this book, I both liked and disliked it.  Most of my dislike stems from not normally enjoying books like this.  Memoirs are not really something I truly enjoy.  That being said, there is something about this book that reminds me of my great-grandfather when he was still alive.  The chapters and stories that Paul is telling feel like sitting on the back porch of my grandfather’s house and him telling me about his childhood.  If I am honest, this is the first time I have read a book where I felt that specific nostalgia reading it.  The kind of story where you might not necessarily love the story itself, but you love the person telling it to you.

Overall – If you are someone that likes memoirs, I think you would end up liking this book, but as I said, this is not something you can necessarily devour in one sitting.  It is a book you need to pace yourself through, but it is not unenjoyable.
