The Risk by S.T. Abby is the first book in the Mindf*ck series, and if I am 100% honest with you, I devoured all five of these books within four days.

I found this book on TikTok, where I am finding far too many of my books recently, and the premise of it intrigued me.  She is a female serial killer, he is an FBI agent working on her case, and they stumble together in a romantic relationship.  And you would think it wouldn’t work.  You would think it would be cheesy and he would figure out who she was almost immediately.  You wouldn’t think that you would be on the edge of your bed almost falling out as your phone almost dies and you frantically plug it in in the middle of the night while trying not to wake your husband.

Lane is our heroine, even if she is a serial killer. I adore Lana and I want to be best friends with her.  She is so confident and calm and caring and sweet, and badass. Logan is just as great.  Not only does S.T Abby take the time to really make you fall for her main characters, but you fall for her side characters as well.  When I say fall for them, I don’t even mean as a book spouse.  I mean you fall in love with them and are frantically rooting for them to stay together.

Typically female serial killers kill with poison, or smothering, or something delicate like that.  Not Lana.  She is taking on men twice if not triple her size and bringing them down.  And when the author does this, it is done so realistically that you can absolutely believe what she is doing. 

The literal only problem I had with this book, is Logan is a profiler and sometimes his scenes in the beginning came off as rather wordy.  It sounded almost as thought it was pulled out of criminal minds, and that was where the problem was.  What worked well for TV did not necessarily work well for the book.  But if you can get over that, you will fly through this book.

Overall – I loved this book.  I flew through this book, and then spent about thirty seconds angry at the author for the cliff hanger.  Thankfully this series was published in 2016 or so, so I did not have to wait for any of the other books, otherwise I would have been angry at the author even longer.
